Grupo UNACEM companies receive Third Star of the Peru Carbon Footprint Programme of MINAM

  • Grupo UNACEM businesses receive the Third Carbon Footprint Star Peru from MINAM
This recognition is for companies that have calculated, verified and reduced their greenhouse gas emissions.
The Grupo UNACEM has a Roadmap to move towards carbon neutrality by 2050, which aims to achieve net emissions of 500 kg CO2-eq/t cement by 2030.

The companies of the Grupo UNACEM: UNACEM, UNICON, Celepsa, received the Third Star of the Peru Carbon Footprint Programme of the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM) for having demonstrated a reduction in their carbon footprint verified by a third party, which reflects their commitment to reducing emissions and combating climate change.

‘We are celebrating a milestone that responds to our purpose of growing together to build a sustainable world. As Grupo UNACEM, we are clear about our goal to reduce our carbon footprint and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, focusing our efforts on reducing the clinker factor in cement by replacing it with added materials, without affecting product quality, the use of clean alternative fuels, improving electrical and thermal efficiency, and carbon capture and offsets using technology or through nature-based solutions and innovation to reduce CO2 emissions,’ says Eduardo Sanchez, Grupo UNACEM’s Corporate Industrial Vice President and General Manager of UNACEM.

This recognition highlights the Group’s sustainable development approach, reflected in the achievements of each business unit in Peru. ‘We are aware that leading the way towards carbon neutrality is a great challenge that leads us to contribute to sustainable well-being that not only respects and conserves the environment, but also contributes to improving people’s quality of life,’ added Sánchez.

UNACEM is the first cement company in the country to achieve this recognition. UNICON, a company specialising in ready-mix concrete, has made significant progress in minimising its carbon footprint since 2012, with a focus on innovation and technology as key factors in its decarbonisation pathway, which has led it to become the first company in its sector to achieve the third star. Celepsa, since its inception, has not only focused on clean energy generation, but has also played a leading role in the fight against climate change by investing in the conservation of key ecosystems and investing in clean technologies such as hybrid vehicles and energy efficiency and circular economy initiatives.

This government recognition of the Group’s companies was made official at a ceremony to award the Third Star at the company’s offices, attended by representatives of the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM), the Director General of Climate Change and Desertification and the General Coordinator of Greenhouse Gas Mitigation; the general managers of UNACEM, UNICON and Celepsa and representatives of the companies.
